Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels are arrays of cells containing photovoltaic material that convert solar radiation into direct current (DC) electricity. This DC current then powers an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) which you can use.

In the event that more AC power is being generated than required then it’s possible to sell this electricity back to the grid down the same wires supplying the property. You would also be awarded Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) for the electricity you generate which can be traded independently back to the major electricity providers.

Traditionally PV technology has been very expensive, but advances in technology along with the recent growth in demand has led to economies of scale in production that has eased prices lower, making modern domestic PV installations viable.
